2014 Nov. 8-16>RRT (Roanoke River Trail) EXPLORATORY PHASE

Such an awesome time was had during the LBL B2B trip I thought I'd get the balls rolling for the Roanoke River Trail.
    Where is this trail?
    How long is it?
    Camping?
    Dangers?
    Interests along the way?
    Hammockability?

The tentative dates chosen will allow those normally shackled by the demands of Thanksgiving to attend AND hopefully also keep some (but not all by any menas) of the bugs at bay.

    Thoughts?

Found one (1) youtube vid on paddle camping this trail system. Each site they were at looked hangable assuming alligators can't reach up 2 feet from the floating/swimming position and bight
Looks like the main passage is the river but campsites are up in the swampy areas, maybe not all of the sites but at least several.

Noticed in the first 20ish miles the official camping platforms are scant but as you get along down the trail they become more frequent.

MM - If memory serves, you must camp on/around the platforms and you must carry a sanitation device and pack out your poop!

I know someone locally did this sometime this year and filed a trip report. I'll try to find it for you.

    OK packing poop.
At the beginning of the trip we'll draw straws..looser has to paddle the poop kayak....or tow a mini-barge behind the kayak. How's that! And/or an inner tube poop float, and/or hold it until you get to a river town and/or carry a cylinder of helium and fly it out.....we're hangers after all, used to dealing with crappy situations, we'll figure a way to solve the dilenema

MM's rear hatch could be the designated port-a-potty

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: Is there a "latrine" on the platform?

A: Most of our campsites do not have latrines on the platforms--only a small wooden enclosure to provide privacy for you to place your own port-a-potties.

*Several of our newer platforms on the upper Roanoke have in-ground or outside toilets (Tusca, Tilley, The Bluff and River Landing). You can look at the individual descriptions of each campsite for addition information about such amenities.

PLEASE DO NOT empty your port-a-potty around the platform when you leave! We suggest that you line your port-a-potty (5 gallon bucket) with a heavy-duty trash bag. ALL WASTES must be taken back to land and disposed of properly.

Suggestion: Some paddlers use kitty litter in the plastic bags to soak up liquid waste and reduce odor.

Sample map showing camping platform locations:
Look closely at the map for Devils Gut. You'll notice it is a 'side trail' off the main river, in fact there are many possible side paddles off the main river, and a lot of the camping platforms are on these side tributaries...this means many things-that loops are possible, that once could easily get lost in the swampland, and that the trip can be speeded up or slowed down by the number of side trips you want because platforms are also on the main river. Just more info to throw into the grinder.
