I just got 50 ft of amsteel in the mail, and I need some advice

So I just got 50 feet of "red" (more like pink) amsteel. how much amsteel should I have on each side of my hammock for suspension? I want to be safe and have enough, but I don't want to have one tie-out in Europe and the other in China if ya know what I mean. Thanks in advance for the advice.

My rule of thumb is 12' per whoopie sling....so figure on 24' total.
I used to be a somebody, now I just camp.

Congrats, There seems to have been a post a while back about whoopie lengths we carry being to long. I recently went to the "no hardware" setup by Griz, using dynaglide and am pretty happy, they are about 5-6 ft. I had some 7 footers on a hammock I made for my son and ended up shortening then to about 6 ft. There is an excel spread sheet by opie I think that lets you put in loop sizes and overall lenght and it gives you all the different section lenghts. Just a thought but as I move tested equipment to son and grandson I ran across a post regarding trees straps, I have found it helpful in that it said to stagger strap lengths. A 7 and a 9 or 6 and a 9 is better than carring two equal length starps, just food for thought.

Which suspension system do you intend to use? Amsteel tells us one of the materials but not if you plan to use a trucker's hitch, whoopie sling, etc.

Check the Southeast Forum for hangs in your area.

I generally shoot for 6' whoopies and then adjust the tree straps based on the trees. For example I know some places where the trees are either huge or spread out so I take 12' straps.

On average I tend to make 6' foot whoopies for either myself or friends. Nice to round off a length at 10' (smaller thae 6' finished) or 12'.

IMHO, I think you'll get more bang for the buck with UCRs. Throw a small safety pin on and your solid.

I also carry a short length of Amsteel (3 or 4 feet) with two loops, one on each end. That way, I can easily lengthen either a tree strap or a whoopie.

Otherwise, I use it to hang my pack off the ground.

    Handy and multi-functional.
