    Toggles for Marlin spike hitch

I made a set of toggles today they are the diameter of a #2 pencil and 2 1/2" long . I was wondering if the diameter of the toggle matters ? I just want something to hold the knot(and as small as possible) they are solid stock so I am thinking I can make them shorter any thoughts ?

No problems I see. The toggle needs to be strong enough to resist compression so you are good to go. I think shorter is fine as well since the whoopie sits on the knot anyway but longer toggles are useful during set up to keep the whoopie sling from slippping off when the hammock is being moved around.

They look really nice, smaller diameter will mean more wrinkled webbing but other than that I haven't read of any problems on here.

My toggles are of a similar diameter to yours, and hollow cf cut from a section of broken fishing rod... I've had no problems so far and they seem to show any kind of wear!

    Hope this helps

Shouldn't be a problem. I've been playing with MSH and whoopies for the last month or so (thanks, Duffy, if you're reading this!), since it allows for a shorter strap holding the hammock/insulation to the pack--less looping before tucking when I pack up in the AM.

First, I made a pair of toggles out of carbon fiber arrow shafts I had left over from the pack construction. Those did just fine. Then, I had the brainstorm of, "Wait! I'm already using mini 'biners to hold the Camelbak to the pack...why not try those!" And yeah...they worked just fine.

So, no, I don't think there's a minimum diameter (though I could be wrong), as long as your toggle will hold up okay against the compression forces on it. Solid bar stock should do just fine (if be a little heavy for the length--but we're talking "heavy" in a relative sense, not an absolute one).

Let us know how it works out!

I saw about 3" off a knitting needle that's a tiny bit smaller than a #2 pencil. Olddog taught me that trick.

ditto on everyone else! as long as your material is crush proof youre good! Sticks can work well if you dont want to carry extra toggels. The set I made for my marlin spike hitch suspension is made from wally world knitting needles

I cut 4 pairs from 1 solid plastic clothes hanger. Cheap, easy, visible enough if you drop one & dikes cut them easy enough. I just melted the ends a bit so they wouldn't snag on anything, smoothed the cuts.
Use for MSH as well as attaching tarp line to their anchor point for fast tear down. Experimenting with the tarp line yet. Simple loop in the line at the tree & trying out the mini line-loks I got through the forum store with 2.2 zing-it. May feel more secure with a mini-biner in place of the toggle at the tree if the line-locs slip ( while setting up )....so far though it works pretty good holding slight tension on it until the tarp is attached at both anchors.

My vote is to keep what you have in the pic, unique, effective. One of a kind to me is great.
