Pole Mod: Pole Length/Tarp Width Ratio

I want to either add my own pockets or sew on some 2qzq pockets.

Anyone have an idea as to what pole length is needed on a sil tarp of a given length? I understand that the length will be different depending on a number of factors. I'm just looking for general guidelines here.

I dont know the answer, but you could get a 10' piece of pvc and experiment with that then get the proper length alum. poles
    Good luck,

Hmm.. I was hoping someone would have the ratio for their setups at hand. I'm thinking of doing the polemod like my tarptent rainbow. Have an adjustable ladder lock between the tarps edge and the pocket. that way I could adjust based on stretch.

My poles are 2" longer than the overall tarp width.

Thanks! thats the info i was looking for. I'll aim for at least 4-6 inches bigger so I can cut them down.

When I put the poles on my Guide Gear tarp, I measured from the ridgeline to the bottom of my pockets, then doubled that number. Made sure that I got the poles a few inches longer, so I could cut them down. As it turned out, with a little stretch, I didn't have to cut mine down.....RR

Ok, i did some digging at the house today and came up with some 127" poles (from a TT DoubleRainbow w/ one section removed) my tarp is 114" across. That means I need to add aprox. 5.5" to the tarp width on each side. I will accomplish this by adding 6" of webbing down to the pole tips attached to the tarp with a ladder lock. That way when I pitch the tarp I can adjust the flex of the poles. If I'm happy with the mod I'll then order a dedicated set of poles and shorten as needed. Anyone see an issue with this plan?

That looks good. You'll be able to adjust for the amount of desired tension. Well done!
