    Tree straps: sewn vs knotted

    Hey Everybody,

I have a nooberific question for you all. When it comes to tree straps...what is theoretically considered to be the stongest and lightest way to make a strap?

    Sewn or knotted?

My plan is to have my tree strap as one large continuous loop...then I will larkshead the enire loop around the tree...my logic being that I figure it must be better for the tree because then I have my weight spread out over two one inch straps instead of just one.

    Thoughts?

Sewn is going to be lighter than knotted as uses less material. Also easier to see when it's about to fail whereas knots contain a lot of stress risers

I'd just go with a sewn eye on the ends of your tree straps. No need really to making one large loop as that is just going to cause you to carry twice the weight in straps as you need to.

If your worried about hurting the tree that much... You can always get the strength of the sewn loop and then just wrap twice around the tree...

Oh and as a side note... Lightest and strongest are rarely the same answer... And usually are light years apart...

    Water Knot

Where I live the trees aren't really huge or anything...so the total length of the loop would only need to be like 24 to 36 inches end to end.

But with that said maybe a big loop isn't really the way to go.

So but even still? Whats stronger? Knotted or sewn? If I used a knot it would most likely be a water knot because its pretty clean and easy to do.

Oh and thanks for the great responses so far everybody...keep em comming

I believe you are over thinking it, does your WBBB have webbing suspension? If so you have all you need.

If you're still worried about hurting the trees, get 1 and 1/2 inch webbing with loop(s) sewn in the end(s).

Sewn will be stronger, pack down smaller and lighter (takes less webbing) in my opinion. Good luck!

I've got knots on mine right now, but only until I get around to sewing some box stitches on instead. The overhand loop on there currently adds weight, and gives me a smaller maximum tree size...

I have knots on mine and if you know how to tie them right you have nothing to worry about and no they don’t weigh more bc you are just using the webbing you already have.

What knots are you using? The weight will be more regardless, per foot of useable tree strap. Yours may not weigh more than one sewn with the same length of strap, but you have less available to you.
