    70D coated nylon ripstop

So is this 70D coated nylon ripstop a material that is good for tarps? I have want to buy some in Atac camo but don't know how it compares to other materials. I am not looking for any backpacking miles type of light weight, but don't want to add 3 pounds to my Superfly's weight either.

    What are your thoughts?

70d is 1.9oz per sq yard uncoated which works but will be significantly heavier than the same tarp in 30d or 1.1oz per square yd.

It'll work, but (assuming everything else is the same: lines, dimensions, stakes, etc.) it'll be about double the weight of your Superfly. "70d coated" probably means a polyurethane coating, which is heavier than the silicone impregnation used in 30d sil (which is what the Superfly is made of), on top of the 1.9 oz/sq yd base weight of the fabric (versus 1.1 oz base weight of the 30d)

Price you pay for camo, honestly. Uncoated camo fabrics can be had in very light weights per square yard; coated camo fabrics (for whatever reason) are usually heavier. At least, that's been my experience.

    Hope it helps!

Imade this tarp out of the 70D. It is polyurethane coated and weighs 2.8 oz. per square yard. My tarp is 27 oz. It's a nice tarp and very durable.

I made a big hex tarp out of 70D coated. It's probably pushing 2.5 pounds but it's big.

    Durable stuff too.

I am about to do the same. Did you notice DIY Gear Supply has 70d urethane coated ripstop nylon 2nds in "digital camo" for $2.95/yd? Awesome deal. Can't wait to get started on my Blackcat(s).

That's what I used for a tarp. Good stuff and great price.

I "almost" finished my Blackcat this weekend, using DIYGS's 70d urethane coated ripstop. Minus the webbing attachment points and D-rings (still to add), it weighs 27.8 oz. Heavy, but darn near bullet-proof. I borrowed the Toxaway's dimensions, which look pretty good to me.

Now that I've got the Bernina Minimatic all oiled and running nicely again, and brushed up on my thread-injecting skills after a long hiatus... I need to make 2 more!
