You might also consider a lightly used expedition. There's no weight penalty (strange I know). If you get him an "adult" sized hammock then you can loan it out or lounge in it yourself.

Another option....just to get started is something like a parachute hammock. It's pretty easy to customize (add whoopies, tree straps, ridgeline, and a DIY or Walmart tarp). I set mine up in the backyard and my kids have a blast in it..

I'm trying to stay with an integrated net and zipper, but very surprising that there is no difference in weight.
