I was going to suggest this also as a back up. Another thread a few months back was started about this subject. Just fill the bags and shallow bury.
The bag weight isn't an issue and packs small. You can also use them in sand or soft ground and they are handy to use as a bag, I hear. A true multitasker.
Remember to take pics and a trip report when your back. Good luck and have fun.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
The trouble with grocery bags is that you may not be able to get them out in the morning if the snow freezes solid.
I do dead man anchors and just learned to tie knots. Then the only thing I need to get out of the ground is my cord and I leave everything buried in the snow.

So what about snow on the tarp? Will the sil shed it OK? Or do I need to worry, and spend the night waking up and shaking my.....tarp.
The reason I ask is, several years ago, on a camp out with the scouts, it started to snow early one morning, and snowed the whole day. We were knocking snow off the t**ts every few hours. They were the big canvas ones, and not sil. The top also doesn't have the sharp angle like a tarp will either.
Thanks......RR

Stuff sacks work well for deadman anchors as well. I use a mx of commercial parachute type anchors, snow stakes and burried trail sticks. Stomp out and area where you will pitch your set up and let it harden a bit before you set your anchors. No need to dig too deep.
In just about any kind of shelter you are going to have knock snow off just depends on the pitch angle and make up of the snow.

In a foot or less I will just pick my hang and kick/stomp the area down. Then I just use my normal stakes. Lately I've been using some GoLite UL V-stakes but I have some MSR needles and those things are awesome.
I am going to use some snow stakes I fashioned out of a 5 gal bucket this weekend. Will let you know hbow to make them if they work.
