Tutorial: How To Make an UCR

Here's my attempt to explain how to make an Utility Constrictor Rope for hammock suspension. Not so good with a camera so bear with me.

    Here's what you'll need..

You'll want 2 pieces of cord. One about (about 30" for 7/64" Amsteel & about 25" for 2mm cord) long or so which will be the bury (leaving room to tie the prusik). The second piece, will bury into the shorter piece.

Don't forget to taper the ends

With your short piece, measure your eye and bury. From the end, I'll measure 4" and 8", giving me a 2" fixed eye, and 4" to bury.

You'll end up with the fixed eye on the short piece.

Next, on your long piece, make a fixed eye. If your using toggles on your webbing, remember to make the eye large enough to go over the toggle.

Now you'll want to bury the long piece into the short one, starting at the unfinished end.

    It should look like this...

Now backsplice the end you just pulled through.

Now you've got to wrap the loose end to keep it taunt under load. I just replicate a prusik. Take the end, and go under the long piece

    3 wraps work well

After the third wrap, finish the prusik.

I like to make the prusik, then backsplice the end to keep it nice and tight.

All that's left is to attach it to your hammock

    I hope this helps some...

Thanks for the instructions; however I've a noob question. What's the UCR used for and why replace the whoopie?

A whoopies sling requires you to double the cord. An ucr only has a single line going from, tree to hammock, eliminating half of the cord/bulk. The addition of the prusiked end, really makes this an awesome setup. No more chance of the bury coming loose on you.

Thanks for the response; I'll give this a try, sounds great.

Great tutorial fallkniven, with excellent photos!

I have tried UCR's and abandoned them do to my more complicated ways of keeping tension on the tail of the bury. Your solution is elegantly simple.

However, I have one question about your prussic type knot to hold the tail. After putting tension on the hammock, how hard is it to undo?

The prusik only needs to be tight enough to hold the loose end of the bury. So there isn't any load applied to it. I just tighten it enough to hold that loose bury end, adjusting the ucr is quite easy. I was skeptical at first, but after making the first one, I like them more than whoopies. Same great adjustablitly, with only half the cord.

The length of the longer piece I would assume to be whatever length you're looking for? What size do you tend to use? Also do you tend to use dynaglide only or would 7/64 amsteel do?

Sorry for all the questions - Great tutorial by the way! I was not interested in UCR's but this may have changed my mind.

Yes, the short piece I like to cut at about 15"-20" or so to have room to tie the prusik; and the long piece is how ever long you'd like/need depending on your area, that's what goes from hammock to straps.
Amsteel works as well, you'll just need a longer bury.

For the 2mm dynaglide, 5" is good, and for 7/64" amsteel, 6.5"-7" will hold.
