I may be answering this question right now by experiment...
if I leave a marlinspike in my webbing what does everybody think about pulling it from the opposite direction? I mean wrapping the other end of the strap around the tree but not retying the marlinspike?
I would try it and see what happens. Although I can't see the advantage of leaving it tied as its such an easy knot to untie and then re-do.
it just happened that I had left them in the straps last time unintentionally...I agree it is an easy knot. the question is of academic interest only. it is doing fine so far!
Try it with a piece of 1/8" rope. Pull on the correct end and all is good. Pull on the other end and the knot moves around forming a slip knot, leaving the loop around the toggle loose.
Webbing with a whoopie looped on it stabilizes the knot some and tends to hide this change but the fact is, it does matter which way it is tied/hung.
