dogbooties.com has really cheap ($2.00) cloth booties that mine used to wear in the hammock so her nails weren't in direct contact with the fabric. I'd also make sure she was on a very thin water resistant cloth so she didn't get the hammock fabric all 'funky'. I work in a hospital and very often take the water resistant cloth outer cover they use to wrap autoclaved instruments in. It's great for any kind of wet dog situation. It is similar to Tyvek just not completely waterproof.

My dog Lola sleeps in the hammock with me and even shares my sleeping bag, but then she's a miniature schnauzer so I can afford the room.
She does however have her own tent like THIS

Because she sleeps in my hammock this s used as a den for her at home but it compacts well and weighs very little. Perhaps your dog could carry it?

This is a question for HONEY BADGER-I know this is an old, old thread, but was wondering if you use your giant dog (Great Dane/Mastiff) to carry/pack things when hiking or other outdoor excursions? Do you take him often? I bet he is an awesome dog all grown up.

I make a little mixture of olive oil and cayenne pepper, and rub it into the leash (paracord, webbing, etc.) and try to get the dog to play tug of war.. it doesn't take much time at all for them to figure out putting things in their mouth is a bad idea.
A better way is to hang the run high enough he can't get to it and use a 6' coated drop cable, to hook Chewie up to. I use a continuous loop to attach the drop to the elevated run. Check for wear if used frequently.

My pooch is a Borgi, he can chew webbing in two like he's using a pair of sissors. He can carry his rig too.

Took my pup, Sandy, on her first overnighter this past weekend. She loves to go hiking, swimming and exploring, but hasn't spent the night out "camping" before. It only got down to around 48 Saturday night, so I don't think she got cold at all. She did get up and growl at several campsite "invaders", mostly raccoons. I never got attacked, so she must have done her job well as she saw it. I had a piece of rope between the two trees that I hung from with a shorter piece of paracord as a leash attached to the main line. It gave her enough room to move around a good bit, but not get tangled in the tarp lines. Here's a pic after the hiking, before dinner and bedtime. Really excited that she enjoyed it and behaved well, looking forward to many more excursions! I had an old padded moving blanket that I put on the ground under the hanmmock that she slept on[IMG][/IMG]

I hike with my Cairn terrier all thru the Whites . He sleeps in my hammock with me . When my feet get cold he sleeps in the quilt footbox. Hopefully your pooch has his own pack . Baxters pack consists of platypus/water,bison bowl, food, paw wax, fleece sweater, micro fiber towel, and 20ft paracord with 2 small carabiners. Dogs can carry 33% of their own body mass. Most dogs like to work and carry a load.I get a lot of looks/comments when I section hike . I use the micro fiber towel to clean him of before he enters the hammock . Don't know the weight of pal. I would try to have your dog sleep with you in a back yard setting in your hammock.

Do you use the paracord for a makeshift leash at camp? I don't know why I never thought of that as a leash?

I may give that a shot...let me know. Any other ideas to share for dog camping?

The paracord is used as a leash/any use item. Baxter also has a Nit-ize collar light whack helps him navigate at night. Also if you let your dog off leash 98% of the time . Its great for tracking in the dark.IMG_7625.jpg

I forgot its also a good idea to spray gear/dog gear with permethrin . Dog pack, dog fleece, hammock, bug netting, clothing, and so on. Never had an issue with sleeping with bugs.
