I have been gifted with a drop off dog. Her name is now bonnie,a very loyal creature indeed. The problems we have encountered being that she is a boston terrier with short hair and very little body fat. The heat is the killer for her, anything else she will endure.Days that it is hot and sunny shes only good for around 5 miles due to body heat issues. The poison ivy is an issue when you get them in the hammock with you,as is the ticks .i use a reflectix pad for her to sit on then cover her with my coat,or turn my down coat into a small dog hut with a piece of zing it and a tent stake. I too will be on the a t this coming year, sadly without the bon bon(bonnies trail name). She truely deserves to go with the miles that are under her belt, but i dont want to put her at risk. There are alot of things that will be unknown to me ,so i have no point of reference to provide safety for her. Good luck I hope to see you out there. I liked your statement on white blaze that you are out there to enjoy the trail not endure it. I think of that statement often.peace......Hairbear

Thanks to all of you who replied to my question about sleeping arrangements with my Standard Poodle while hammocking. When I wrote my question, Fleur was going to have to go with me. Then arrangements were able to be made to have her be with my daughter in New Mexico for the duration. Then that had to fall through a couple of days ago. It is good to come back to such thoughtful suggestions. Right now I am going to try to get a cuben tarp that will give both of us space that will help the situation. I will keep her tied to me with her leash, which will enable me to know what she is doing, especially if she becomes concerned about something. I will provide something for her to sleep upon that does not absorb water. Still looking into that. Previously with another Standard Poodle, we slept in our Stephenson
2R. When it was very cold, we both shivered through the night. That problem was alleviated entirely when I bought her a women's size S fleece
top, which she wore at night. I am glad that she will be with me. I wish she could sleep in my Speer hammock, but it doesn't seem that is feasible. We will have a good time, but I do not kid myself that it will be MY hike. Now, if the snow and ice will depart from SW Virginia, we will get out there to test our plan.

He's eaten one set of Whoopies, a key chain I made from paracord, a leash and his walking harness. The only thing he left was the buckles and ring from the harness and ring from the key chain. All of these he's managed to grab off my gear table.

My dog goes with me. He's a little 10lb Terrier mix. Sleeps in the hammock with me. When it gets cold out he even insists on getting into the hammock and the downy goodness to keep warm even if I am not in it. I just now had the thought of making him his own little DIY Bridge hammock with integrated down TQ/UQ to sleep in, 4 corner stake outs. Wow its amazing what a little inspiration can do.

If its nice out, our dog sleeps on the ground. I tried getting him to sleep on a reflectex mat but he didn't like it, so he slept right on the dirt/leaf litter. If it gets cold at night, he climb in with me. Sometimes he even tries climbing in when I KNOW he isn't that cold! He's part pit, he likes to snuggle...

That being said, my friend hiked the long trail with her Aussie Shepherd and it was a great experience. As long as you know the limitations for the both of you, you will be fine.
Chase your dreams without fear or hesitation!

when we take our dog, she sleeps in her folding travel crate. In summer we leave the door open unless she is being tormented by bugs, and inwinter, she snuggles down with the door closed. Her crate fits under the end of my tarp. The crate folds down to vitually nothing, and fits in its own bag.

Lots of good suggestions here. ( Have seen pics of dog portable trail tents working )

Standard Poodles are wonderful trail dogs. Smart and trainable.
They keep the bears away and don't bark much.

Both of ours ( not in the same years ) loved camping and hiking.
By the time we humans were both in hammocks Helix was too old, 12+yrs, to train to his own hammock. He loved the tent and questioned why his people were no longer in there with him.

I would train the next dog to hang.
Helix always had a ground mat, for vanCamping we used 4-interlocking-squares of the thick gym mat, so it wouldn't blow away. Lighter mats need to be anchored in the wind.

If I am getting another dog to train for the AT and other trails I would DIY :

a dog-size hammock hung under my hammock; mat inserted between layers; boat shape to attach seasonal cover ( net or nylon+fleece to suite weather ); a few other weather necessary options ( extra thick fleece mat + down quilt rolled into tube/collar/walls ); ideally it would lay on the ground when the dog stepped into it and the sides would stand up.
( A brief text-sketch of the concept. ) Of course he/she would carry an appropriate amount of their gear themselves.

A few decades back, when we had our first standard poodle, Cletus, someone ran a standard poodle dogsled team in the Iditarod to prove their stamina.

Hey sawnie, heres a thought. Take some tyvec three foot wide by 9 foot long.

Sew it togeter at the end leaving a channel in the tyvec for a piece of 2.2 zing it to pass through.

When folded up its a welcome mat for your hammock that is three by three, and weighs very little.

When unfolded,im seeing little squares of velcro holding it together in this mode,it pops out to be a two sided tent with a tyvec floor, you could get creative and fashion doors if you like that open ,and close for wind block/venting.

Run you cordage through the channel ,now you have a ridge line that you can tie to the trees your hanging from ,this puts the dog house right where you could reach out ,and pet the poodle.

A piece of pad in the floor for winter with your unused while sleepin jacket over the top ,or inside covering the pooch in colder weather.

You could spray the thing so that it repels ticks and mosquitos .

This could work for any size friend just custom size it.

Lumber yards have this type of material that wraps the board shipments that come in. They will give it to you for free to keep from filling up those expensive to have dumpsters.

    Good luck.

I live in Japan and have Japanese Akita's (only one currently). Your statement actually made me LOL because I have such a funny (now) memory of exactly this situation.

The first time I took Lily (80lb female) hammock camping, she became "concerned" about something around 2 in the morning, when I was dead asleep. Leash was on my wrist, and she bolted after something, probably a mouse, passing directly under me, and out the other side. Guess how that ended?

When I take dogs camping now, we sleep in a tent.

    Cheers,
    Matt
