    Thinking of making a UQ

So with my small budget I was planning on doing a bit of DIY and make my own 2/3 UQ ala warbonnet style.

    I have two questions:

-I have either 700fp down at 6.3USD/oz or 860fp down at 10.1USD/oz to choose from. Is the 860fp down really worth the extra cash?

-What thickness should the uq be? Thinking of around 2.5'-3', would this be appropriate for temps dropping to low 30's?

    Thanks,
    Chris

Or, you can send an email to Ed Speer and ask for the hammockforums discount and get 900fp for $8/oz.

2.5-3 feet of thickness should be sufficient. 3 inches would probably do as well, depending on how cold you sleep.

    Good luck with the project!

Forgot to mention, the discount ends Jan. 31st. Details are here.

2.5-3" would get you down in the 30's probably. The higher fill power would save you an ounce or 2 in overall weight for the same amount of loft.

So the only benefit would be a 2 oz weight saving? Doesn't really seem like it's worth the extra cash.

I assume it probably compresses smaller too, but that's just a guess. My cheapo down jackets don't squish down nearly as well as my higher end one. Could just be construction techniques, but I suspect the higher quality down has something to do with it also.

I don't know exactly how much weight you would save. I just threw out some numbers, no math involved . If you could give the estimated dimensions of the quilt it should be pretty easy to figure the weight savings between to 2 fill powers..

    40'x46'x3'

the difference in weight would only be 1.47oz, so a 2 oz estimate is pretty darn good.

Or a pretty darn lucky guess
