Thanks all I have 5' straps already made and find when I use them there is usually a good bit of extra strap was hoping to go smaller but am now thinking I should play it safe and stick with my 5' straps
I wouldn't go shorter... In fact I'd carry a backup for extra length. In my area I can always find somewhere to hang with 6' straps... But I learned two weeks ago that it may not be the BEST spot available.

In Maine 6'to8' I am new to this and a friend said 6' to 8' would be good . So I plan on to different one lol . Great post I am learning !
6' seems to be the typical length. Works for me most of the time.
If you have a loop in the hammock end of your strap then you can always carry an extra 2'-3' double loop end strap or amsteel for an extender.
My last rig I tried as an experiment with some left over strap was a 2' long strap with a loop at each end for the tree with double loop end amsteel leaders.
Why not carry one 5' and one 7' or 8'?
