I don't know what they are doing in the stores, but in the Clearance section of JCP.com they are down to $25. On the larger sizes they are already out or only have Hunter Orange, so I wouldn't expect them to discount any more.

I bought a couple just to have. Not sure what I'll do, yet. I may harvest the down, maybe make some sleeves like the JRB set, but for starters I'll just pull the sleeves inside out, zip it up, and put it inside my Pancho Liner UQ for a little extra warmth. Probably all I'll need here in TX, and I'll also have a down jacket to use as a layer as well (even if it is orange!).

NOTE: Online reviews at JCP.com note that material is not very substantial and may not be suitable as outer layer due to risk of tearing or punctures. Those who have already purchased...thoughts?

Well I wouldn't go charging through the bush in one but the material isn't that delicate. Certainly more than enough for our re-purposing (and perfectly reasonable for its intended use too).

I actually ended up being pleasantly surprised with use of one of mine as <gasp> a jacket last year. They really were very good deals.

Well ,just ordered one 2x tall .Green was available, hopefully the shade shown is wrong but oh well at least I finally will have a down jacket .

The material is very similar to the lightweight fabrics most of us are used to here, but for someone paying full price and expecting bomb-proof I can understand the disappointment.
They are actually built very well, as those who have torn them apart can attest. The zipper sucks but another than that they are great low end u/l jackets.

You probabley can't get excited about a black jacket . What you need is a nice lime green one to lift your mood .

Thank you for inspiration Deerfu, HB, and everyone else on here. I am newer to hanging and am really interested in the DIY's you all do. I have tackled whoopies and made my own Fronkey bug nets, (although I paid the cleaners down the street to do the sewing, so I don't know if I get any points for this). But this will be my first real sewing project. I just ordered 9 3XLT jackets from JCP and am really psyched to try this project. It seems that the original design was to sew the bottoms of two coats together, remove the arms, and close the holes. Then attach grosgrain along the edge for the suspension system. Later, HB and some others really ramped it up by detaching all the panels and resetting them to form a classic underquilt model. My 2 questions are one, is there a consensus as to which method is the most effective for warmth? And two, is there a clear set of directions to go along with the patterns of either or both of these designs?

Also, if there is another design that is more effective, please let me know. Remember, this is my first real sew project, so if the results are extremely similar, I would prefer the job that is easier to undertake
