    3/4 Underquilt For Newbie

Looking for cheap 3/4 UQ to get started hanging. Want to try out for 3-4 months before making larger investment. I live in Florida so 1 season quilt would be ok.

I chopped up an old summer weight synthetic sleeping bag, folded the sides over and stitched crudely to make channels for bungy both lengthways and to cinch the ends. Worked fine for me until I got a proper JRB one for Christmas and I have thrown the old synthetic away.

can't go wrong with a poncho liner underquilt...depending on whether you get one new or used the total price will come in at around $50 max for all supplies. If you can sew they are wonderful. If not you can do a no sew version as well. links below for directions.

    no sew: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=11777

    sew-em-up: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=18539

I have the sewemup variety and love it. good luck on your search...

However, if you have no DIY skills, arrowhead equipment sells 3/4 synthetic quilts for $100. the brown one is on sale for $95 right now on their site. Just an FYI...

one last thing...PLUQ's are good to about 50* without anything like ix put inside of them. the AHE ones are good to 30*.........

a kids sleeping bag from walmart could be used. use trap clips in corners. no damage and still have a bag to use.

gavmac, Fish and KK, Thanks so much for your quick responses. I will look into all 3.

BTW I am planning a SOBO thru hike in June. I have ordered a Freebird from Dream Hammock. I already own a WL Tadpole tarp. If all goes well this spring I plan on purchasing a Darien UL http://www.dream-hammock.com/DarienUL.html

I am also considering a (Yeti 3/4 UQ), (Enlightened Equip 30* TQ) and (MLD Hex Cuben tarp).

Would appreciate any feedback or other suggestions you may have on any of the above.
Obviously trying to keep my weight to min. Have always used tarp/bivey set-up in the past.

+1 on the no sew poncho liner underquilt. You can find poncho liners for $20, and with a minimum of effort have a serviceable UQ.

    Cordlocks at WalMart for $1
20' of shock cord (Joann's) for $6 (if I recall)
$20 poncho liner (Mil. Surplus store)

You might need some grosgrain ribbon to replace broken ties. ( I sewed loops on mine... makes it much easier.

I have taken my PLUQ down to the mid-40's and I am a cold sleeper.

    Thrift store

Bob made an underquilt from a down comforter bought at the thrift store for $12.50. Cut it in half, sewed bias tape down each edge to make a pocket for shock cord. Kept him warm in 18* weather but too bulky for the AT.
