In the movie Temple Grandin, she uses a "hug box" to lessen anxiety. A hammock might do the same thing. However, unlike most of us hangers, the autistic person might want to maximize shoulder squeeze to achieve the same effect as the hug box.

So HF members, what is the best hammock for somebody who likes shoulder squeeze? I'm thinking that a flat, diagonal lay is the enemy of shoulder squeeze, as are longer hammocks (10 or 11 feet). The shorter the hammock, the better, and lay in it like a banana, no diagonal lay.

I have a short, deep hammock made from some somewhat stretchy upholstery fabric that hugs you pretty good. Nice for some backyard time or a nap but is almost painful for overnight. I was made by the Hammock Shop in Langlade, WI.

If you made a bridge hammock with shorter-than-normal spreader bars, that would definitely give you a hug. The shortened spreader bars would probably drastically reduce tippiness too.

Thanks for the info. You literally took my thoughts and placed them here. The fabric was the biggest concern I had. The "hammock swing" that we use in the sensory room is really cool and made of two different fabrics. Depending on which one is on the outside depends on the "stretchiness," when sitting in it. The two boys that I have taken over LOVE IT. (so do we therapists to be honest.) I defiantly would want to do more research before even suggesting this. Thanks for the info.

As you know children of Autism have both sensory issues ( fabrics getting tight and rubbing may be an issue) as well as impulse control, which might make for a safety concern. I wouldn't recommend a standard hammock to a family unless constant supervision were present, when utilized as a therapeutic tool or reward. To sleep in overnight would depend on functioning ability of child. Just my .02.

Something to consider though. I'll pass on to colleagues and get some opinions.

    Thanks.

Lots of great thoughts and input. I love this forum. I mentioned in an other reply as did Hototo that the fabric is one of the big keys and I agree that the squeeze would also be an big consideration. Body socks and weighted blankets are items that are also shown to be very beneficial to ASD individuals. Keep the thoughts coming I love it thanks.
