Don't be so sure. When I started out the only fabric available was canvas, then Cordura came around and revolutionized things. Now Cordura is the "heavy stuff".

I hope I eat my words some day... I suppose everyone thinks 'how could it progress beyond this point' in their time, so you may be right.

Dutch pretty much has that covered.
    Dutch biners
    Dutch clips
Dutch ridgeline biners (These are incredibly small)

He put 9 months of work into it and three generations to get his final bridgeskin. I'm planning on DIYing one myself starting next year. My basis will be a DIY Grizzbridge and I'll modify it from there. Even the initial planning it's looking like I'll need a couple of prototypes before the final version as well. Materials alone shouldn't be too bad, but the work you have to put into it definitely is the killer.

    Im going the other direction

I think you will see special trees being developed through biological gene splicing. You will be able to walk out into the forest and trees will have adjustable suspensions hanging from their trunks. The tree canopies will be waterproof when it rains and open up for sunshine or shade depending on temperatures. There will be a spigot on the side of the tree with fresh filtered drinking water. A hot water tap will be available also, so you don't need to boil water any longer..............or maybe just skinnier ropes?
