Start out enjoying the Grundy Day Loop at Grundy Forest or the Climbers Loop at Foster Falls. Shorter, but a good place to get used to carrying your gear. And very high reward views and sights for your mileage.
You could also walk the 2.5 miles from Foster up the Gizzard to Laurel Branch Gorge and maybe walk down in a ways and back up. It's only .2 miles down to the creek, but it lets you experience a steep climb out and maneuvering in rocks, both of which would be helpful for conditioning at Savage Gulf.
