    how I got interested

I got interested in hammocks because I always wanted to sleep under the stars, be able to look out over a dying campfire, and watch the trees sway in the wind as I fall asleep in the great outdoors.

    Cheesy...Yes.....but honest.

nothing is better then being close to peaceful chaos of the outdoors.

Smile Why I recently became a 'Hanger.'

Well, been hiking and camping most of my life. Started watching hammock vids on Youtube and as I'm getting into traveling lighter on the trail, I decided to finally sell my tent and got my first hammock the other day. It is a Walmart cheapie, but I've seen lots of good reviews on it. Later when I can afford, I plan to upgrade to a better brand. I like the idea of sleeping off the ground and there are lots of ways to keep warm. Actually, we have more hot weather here in South Texas than cold, so sleeping in an open hammock just makes sense to me. My 26 year old daughter bought an indoor hammock for her room and sleeps in it. I took a nice long nap in it last week, along with my 2 Daschunds (they love it). This seems like a really cool, friendly forum and I hope to get a lot of info and make some friends too. Barney

Hey, nothin' cheesy about your reasons! It beats wasting time watching TV! No place else I'd rather be. You hit the proverbial nail on the head my friend!

I became a "hanger" by way of being a really horrible camper.

My first time camping ever was a cub scout campout with my 3 little boys. I struggled with a monstrously complicated 6-man tent--in the dark, then slept on the ground with no pad or insulation except for a couple blankets. My only consolation was that it took a Scout Master and 2 experienced boy scouts an hour to put up the tent. They said they'd never seen one like it before! I swore I'd never pitch that tent again.

My second trip was a "polar bear" campout. Same story with the tent and the dark (I had studied the directions, labeled things, and thought I'd be so much better at it the 2nd time around! LOL). I'd borrowed some cold-weather sleeping bags for the kids and had WAY more blankets, but the ground still felt like a block of ice--20 degrees and it snowed all night. The kids slept fine but I shivered my way through a downright painful night, and swore I would NEVER sleep in a tent again.

Next day I bought a hammock from the Scoutmaster. I grabbed a pop-up tent for the kids that summer, and our 3rd trip was much more pleasant!
The hammock has been packed up for about a year, but I put it up in my
bedroom this week to see if it would help my back. So far, so good!

    happy accident

I got into hammock when I went camping on Cumberland Island to test out a new Cuben fiber tent for a thru hike. there was a group of us and i had a mesh hammock that i put into the pack so that we would have a sofa to sit on. I found the hammock to be more comfortable than my neo air sleeping pad and tent. Now i have been a hammock camper for three year

    Introduction

    Hi,
About 3 or 4 years ago I met TZBrown on the AT and we had a nice talk about his hammock. It took me several years and a lot of sleepless nights out in the woods to try my luck with a hammock and so far I love it! My set up is a WBBB and MamaJamba tarp.

    Thanks

Welcome to the Forum, a great place to hang out

One foot was doing trail magic along the AT.
It was great, lots of food and great conversation.
during a long hike you really appreciate the kindness of others

Great setup. I have that exact combo also. Love the door kit in stormy weather.

I got the idea of from a friend who was hammocking on a backpacking trip in 2012. About a year later, I got my HH explorer for my birthday. I had my first official hang at my OA ordeal. Fantastic hang although the trip was geared to tents so it was difficult to find a spot to hang. Trip in general was horrible but the sleep was great.
