3 years ago I worked as a medic at a festival in Costa Rica and I figured a hammock would be easier to pack than a tent. I didnt sleep that great as I hadnt learned to diagonal sleep, no ridgeline, no notion of proper hang etc, but I knew I was on to something!
I was first interested by seeing Henny hammocks when I was tent shopping years ago and thought they looked awesome, I never did get it, but it started the interest.
Now, I spend around 10-12 weeks a year in my hammock at work, festivals and backpacking.
About a year ago when I started becoming interested in backpacking I starting looking into shelter options (almost to the point where my brain exploded). I came across Shug and Syntax77 and others and the hammock made the most sense for me. So I skipped the ground altogether and went right for a Dutch half-wit.
Started watching “The Lord of Loligag” and became hooked! Shug has really been a inspiration and mentor!! Ordered my first hammock (WBXLC) and have been lusting after hammock/camping gear ever since!!
On one campout w/ our camping group my s/o had set up an ENO DoubleNest for lounging in. On a lark, I decided to try sleeping in it one night. Never went back to ground!
I got a surplus jungle hammock when I was in college, in the '60s. I loved that thing. Lots of camping in the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks. The netting on the hammock kept the no-seeums and mosquitos at bay. I lived in the hammock instead of sitting at the campfire and getting eaten by bugs. Rain or not, I used my hammock. I don't know what happened to it, it disappeared somewhere over the years.
Since then I have collected hammocks on my travels for work. Hand made plain and fancy. Love 'em.
