I use a hammock because my father did. You either camp on the ground under the stars or in a hammock-just the way it is. Other than family tradition:

*I find hammocks to be more comfortable
*Hammocks generally take up less physical space in the woods
*Hammocks seem to blend with the environment better
*Snakes and other pests don't seem to be as much of an issue in hammocks
*I have yet to find a lightweight tent that sets up as easily as a hammock
*I don't need a chair, tent, or lounger because I already have a hammock
*Hammocks can be strung from aircraft parts-tents can't
*Tents isolate me from the environment which I am trying to which I am escaping
*Hammocks aren't the popular choice-I feel like a rebel and trendsetter
*Tentforums.net is boring--Swingers are more fun.

Hi all. New here and want to say thanks for all the great info. My son and I backpack and canoe and I love my tent which is only a year old. However, the older I get the harder it is to sleep flat on my back. I decided to try a hammock for better sleep, easier to find a campsite on the river, and it's lighter. Haven't gotten to try out the hammocks on the trail yet but we're looking forward to it.

My family and I were camping last summer when shug and the northern hang group came strolling in to the camp group ground. Well my being the nosy kind and of course the group being who they are, I was invited over to look at all the cool items hanging throughout the woods. They told me about hammock forums and I've been hooked since. Of course not having to sleep on the ground is an incredible incentive as well.

    Pain

Everytime I went Packing I never could sleep well. Even if I did I would wake up in the morning and my shoulders woudl kill me...I am a side sleeper on the ground.

Then one night in the Tarp Tent I experienced once again the condensation and driving rain coming in bouncing off the ground. I jsut find it too hard in the Midwest to set up in duff all the time with all of the thorns and such.

So I woke up and looked at my Wife and said..."well that is probably the last time Ol dad sleeps on the ground." Only have once since to keep my wife company when we were car camping..

I still have issues with that though because she is a groundie and it bothers me ... Something about it psychologically tells me it is abandonmnet...

    Anywho..

Thank you to all.. doing good now...

    Longtime lurker, first-time poster.

I forget how, but I stumbled on Just Jeff's website and the rest is history. If there's a Hammocking Hall of Fame, Just Jeff will be a first ballot inductee. Hammocking just makes too much sense, especially on the east coast. This community is fantastic and I really have learned a lot from the members here.

Are you "checkin it out dude" aka steve. Welcome to the forums. I think they were all proud parents giving birth to a new hanger LOL
