Just the thought of being able to go camping, or hiking, without getting wet. Simple as that. I couldn't take sleeping in a tent and getting wet. Doesn't matter what tent I had, how much I treated it, I always got wet. Not anymore!! I got a eno double, a neo 9x9, and a eno bugnet in 2005 and have been happy ever since.

After Gerogia and no switch-back North Carolina? Are you kidding, the Smokies are gravy for hiking once you get up. But it's cold, wet, windy, views blow, waaaaaay too many poorly supervised Scout groups, and of course the camping restrictions on the AT part.to tough on you old man
If I do it again, it will be strictly blue-blazin thru the park. The blues are great, but most of them (especially in the south end) involve quite a bit of fording to stay on course with the AT. Not a bad thing, but that water is mighty cold in March-April.

take the Benton McKay Trail (BMT) I am pretty sure there is only one shelter along that section. There are only 1 or 2 campsites that you have to have reservations at. You will cross it right after Shuckstack or 3.7 miles from Fontana. It end at Big Creek Ranger station. There is a 2.1 mile connector trail that hooks backup with the AT before Davenport Gap shelter or follow the road back to the AT. I know a few people who have done that instead of the AT. PM Sgt Rock and he can fill you in on it.

I might try that route next time. Forgot Rock went that way and got frostbite. I thought about him when I passed the first trail sign indicating the BMT (makes me think of a Subway sandwich now).
