I was a boy scout in 1988 and, while on a canoe outing, saw a couple of adults sleeping in their rain ponchos turned hammocks. It was a little rainy at times, so they got two uses out of their ponchos. Been in the back of my mind ever since. I started hanging in a Byer travel hammock in '06 or '07.

One of the new leaders in our Boy Scout troop showed up with a hammock and I started asking questions. He had an extra hammock so I gave it a try. I slept a lot better than I ever did on the ground. I have been a ground camper for a long time but I am ready to give it up and become a full time hanger.

Curiosity mostly. But, I am all about comfort and while I love tent camping, sleeping in a hammock (a good one, not rope with spreader bars) has to be more comfy than sleeping on the ground regardless of what ground pad you're sleeping on. They say once you go hanging around in trees you won't go back to the ground. I can't imagine that will be the case for me entirely but for so many people to say that there must be a level of comfort beyond ground sleeping that I have been missing for too long.

My back is kinda screwed up from an auto accident but I want to enjoy the outdoors. I have a Toyota Tacoma and almost went with RTT camping but man are those tents expensive! So on a last minute camping trip I have bought my gear and will try to elevate my perspective
