    MO Hammock Friendly Camp Grounds

Right now the majority of what I do with the kiddos is car camping, but I want to try little by little, to get away from that, especially with my 8 year old daughter who's highly outdoor oriented. On the other hand, my nephew is not as interested in the outdoors and gets bored easily.

    My question is:

Have any of my wonderful hammocking "Show Me" neighbors had experience with any hammock friendly camp grounds with short hiking trails and/or other kid friendly entertainment close by? (playgrounds, swimming, canoeing, cave tours)

I've already checked on Washington State Park and that's on this summer's To Do List, but want more, More, MORE!

    Camping

Yawn state near St. Gen on hwy 32 is my park of choice for beauty and pleasure . Hahn has some of the best trails in the state ranging from 1 to 10 miles. Pickle creek trail is a great trail for young kids as it follows pickle creek the entire way. Mooners hollow trail in St. Francois state park is another really good trail for kids at almost 3 miles long.

Added to the list of parks to check out! Anything with a creek is ideal for the kids to play in and more importantly to soak my achin' feet.

    Thanx!

Just a heads up, 'yall . . . My daughter and I have stayed a few times at Watkins Mill state park(she is 11 and a camp nut too). Nice park, good campgrounds, shower houses, plenty of trees in pay lots, nice 4 mile bike trail around the lake. Last time we stayed there to test drive some of our winter hammock gear we were talking to one of the rangers. He was a pretty nice guy who told us that the state parks in MO have started a policy that requires hammocks used in the lots to use three, I repeat, three inch tree straps! He was OK with us using our regular Grand Trunk 1 inch straps that trip but to expect that they were going to start enforcing the policy this next camping season. The policy states that it is still ok to use standard straps while trail or out of pay site camping. Just thought I would put that out there so no one had to sleep in their car instead of under the stars as it should be!

Hoot started a thread about the 3 in straps a while back. Hangers of MO State Parks Heads Up

I called Jeff City and asked them about the 3 inch strap rule and was told it varies from park to park, but they prefer 2 inch nylon straps as a minimum. Washington State Park was fine with 2 inch straps as long as it was placed over something to help insulate the tree from damage. No one I spoke with in the State Parks system was thrilled about hammocks. So your best bet is to call each park beforehand and see what the individual park regulations regarding hammocks are.

On the other hand, I called the MO Conservation Dept Headquarters and they were fine with pretty much any size strap and were very welcoming of hammock campers.

I do so love our MO Conservation Department.

I have pretty much, camped or napped in every major state park in Missouri with a hammock and never had any ranger or conservation agent say anything to me about not being able to hang. If you are being conscientious about protecting the resource and practicing leave no trace ethic, I believe you are welcome in Missouri’s Parks and Wilderness.
