Are these going to be carried at all?? If weight isn't an issue then this changes the cheap vs good dynamic a bit. You might even be able to make some sort of "python straps" from the mule tape. That's basically the suspension and tree strap in one. It will take a bit of sewing but be very cheap. Take a look at the Kammok website for ideas.

Not carried on serious hiking. Probably no more than two mile type hikes with food and water at the destination.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the big part of this project will be the girls doing the work to put these together.

I'm getting excited. I think this will be great for them.

It's tough to go cheaper than JohnSawyer's free mule tape, but the following is the cheapest webbing I've seen. I purchased a roll and am happy with the quality so far.

Go with the full length. That way, they can grow into it. I have daughters in that age range (8 and 10) - one sleeps permanently at home in a hammock. Both have 60x126 DIY tablecloth hammocks. Perfect size - they love them!

126 will take them into adulthood... I would let your budget decide....

My 8 yr old daughter has taken over on of my full length (132") and loves it. I would go with the 126" for down the road.
    It'll be alright Friday!

The mule tape would probably be best/cheapest. To attach it to a tree, use the four wrap method, or Speer Knot. Took a little looking to find the instructions. Started at Just Jeff's site, that linked me to Risks site. Using this with the mule tape, a DIY tablecloth hammock, and your cost all be down. No hardware or toggles to mess with. You could make some hammock ridgelines whoopies with the amsteel, so the hammock lay will be the same each set up. Hope this helps.....RR

Very good thread. I totally should have searched before posting.
I wonder if the 2inch seatbelt webbing on that site would be good for trees

Ya, I guess it is always easy to tie a knot and make them shorter. My kids seem to like really super short hammocks the best for some reason, but they are weird. They curl up like baby kangaroos in the four foot long hammock I made for the three year old.
