My wife and I use fleece sleeping bag liners that we got for $10 on sale (sorry, don't remember where since it's been several years since we purchased them. It keeps us plenty warm in the warmer months here in Tennesse. Granted, not ultra light or compact, but for a budget like ours, it's hard to beat.
Oh wow, forgot all about that thread.
Actually the instructions i used were John Sawyer's. It was pretty simple to make but turned out to be a bit short for me (I like to tuck my TQ over my shoulders when its not screamin' hot outside) so one of my daughter's has it now. My fault...simple solution...use longer material. One thing I'd do different if I make another is run 3 or 4 rows of stitching along the length of the quilt to secure the outer shell to the fleece a little better.
Since then I made a TQ out of a poncho liner and like it better. Here's a link:

Plenty warm, easy to make, it doesn't pick up leaves and other crap when it accidentally hits the ground and it packs up fairly small (smaller than the fleece TQ). Since then I've rethought the way I made it to simplify it significantly and probably cut the overall time to make it down to an hour or so.
BTW, another possibility that just occurred to me...fleece with a poncho liner shell...bet that would be seriously warm...seriously bulky...but warm.

L L Bean sells a zippered fleece sleeping bag for about $25 bucks. I also used it as an UQ in the Fall, and as a bag liner in my 20* sleeping bag.

that is nice, but I'm lookin' to make one with a ripstop outer shell for wind protection.
I bought several yds of fleece at Joann's since it was 40% off. I've prewashed it, and now I think the next step is going to be to quilt two layers of it together. After that I'll add the ripstop shell and foot box. Once the excitement has begun, I'll be sure to add some pics.
