    AZ hang this weekend! 1/17-18

    1/17-18
hey all AZ hangers, this is a short notice trip near Sedona in Sycamore Canyon. We are going to hike on the Dogie Trail all the way up to Taylor Cabin (supposedly an old hideout for mormon polygamysts, and train robbers too) where we stay the night and check out a local cave, some side canyons and sleep amongst the cottonwoods and sycamores.
After a great night's sleep and some hearty grub, we'll pack up and head out on the trail to climb up Casner Mountain and enjoy the views of Red Rock country from all angles. If you have never been down inside of AZ's second largest canyon, just imagine Sedona without the tourists and houses!
So far, we have myself, Drewboy, Dirt4dinner, and possibly RushtheZepplin (got that claytor yet, dude?)
here's a glimpse of the area:

I am drooling! I went to Sycamore Canyon once when I lived in Flagstaff, 83-85. But, that was before my hammock days. I am hoping to someday check out my favorite AZ spots with the addition of a hammock. I can think of so many places: Kachina Wilderness/San Fran Peaks, all along the Mogollon Rim and White Mountains, and the wooded areas near Sedona/Oak Creek.

Too bad a Saguaro Cactus would be tough to hang from!

I wouldn't be surprised if it was illegal either.

Hang report: Arizona Sycamore Canyon Wilderness, 1/17/09-1/18/09

Hi folks. We have reached a milestone in Arizona and had a weekend backpacking trip with a group of 5 hangers. We spent two days in the beautiful Sycamore Canyon Wilderness, near Sedona. I have posted pictures from this trip in my gallery. We hiked in from the Dogie trailhead, camped near Taylor Cabin, and hiked out on Cassner Mtn. Thanks to mikeinfhaz for pulling the group together and helping us achieve critical hanging mass. We had a wide variety of hanging gear on this trip. I'll let Mike discuss some of the technical specifics. We had a great time, and the scenery and company was excellent. The only disappointment was the overnight low of only 38 degrees. We were hoping for the 20's so we could test out the limits of some of our gear. Oh well, you gotta love Arizona! Am looking forward to Mike's next big hang in the spring time.

Drewboy - I moved your post into this thread...it appears above your next post so it looks out of order. Now the threads are merged.

    Andrew - Warbonnet/OES Deluxe
    Tyler - HH Explorer/OES 10x10
Chris - Claytor Mosquito/blue tarp (generic)
    Josh - Amazonas/diamond fly (generic)
    Mike - diy, bridge/cat tarp

just goes to show, everyone has a unique setup and the variety of hammock hangers is substantial.
the hike was tough, 20+ miles some PUD's and snow/ice, water crossings, brush, cacti and other sharp pointy things and a ton of mud. You'd have to hike in AZ to fully appreciate the rugged, harsh environment we live in. Its no wonder the only thing that can scratch out a living is lizards and rattlesnakes.
    Taylor Cabin was pretty cool.
thanks to Andrew for posting pics. Here's a shot of some well rested, hearty hikers ready for day 2:
