    Day Hikes in South Dakota

This summer, my family and I are going out to Yellowstone for vacation. Our plane will land in Keystone, South Dakota, and we will have about 1/2 of a day with nothing to do, and I would like to do a semi-short, 5-6 hour full trip, hike in the area. I've done a little research and found a few trails that I liked the looks of, but I would like to know if there are any nearby trails that any of you would recommend. I would rather not have to drive more than maybe 30 miles from Keystone if possible. Thanks!

your going to be landing in Rapid City i am betting and pry not Keystone unless your coming in on a small plane.....Keystone is about 30 miles from Rapid City

there are a few hikes that might work for you, the one i would suggest and it will require about a 30 minute drive on Sheridan Lake Road to a trail called Boulder Hill we always add the Spring Trail Loop to it and it's about a 5 mile hike with some really excellent view of the Black Hills and out onto the plains from the top of Boulder Hill

sodakgrrl and myself do this hike many times every year and it never gets old, usually stop for lunch at the very top of Boulder Hill and enjoy the view, it's pretty hard to beat

or you could do the Mount Rushmore to Horsethief Lake trail and do an out and back and this would get you to Mt. Rushmore to see that too in the short time you have

pretty tough to go wrong with any trail in the hills in all honesty....don't tell people when you get home though, we're trying to keep it a secret!

    boot

whoops, put hwy 44, when i meant to say sheridan lake road

    Harney Peak

You Might want to hike up to Harney Peak. Start early morn. to avoid the crowds. Google it. There's a fantastic fire lookout up there that is nothing short of a huge rock bunker on the edge of a cliff. Well worth the effort.
