Really only need one car planted at HCtrailhead right, should be doable.
Whether we end Saturday or Sunday I think most travelers will be headed back through Johnson City....so lets plan a group feed post hike. Wisenber needs to cam me a hamburger
Depends on the turnout and size of vehicle at HC I suppose. The forecast looks like a hiking forecast.

I wondered where the victory trail led off to.
It could be that the purpose of my life is merely to serve as a warning to others.

    Mister Dark and Hickery

I finally read this whole thread and see you all might be joining us...Fingers crossed to see you both, though I know Mr.Dark just did this section last month....maybe conditions will be a little different this time. My biggest hopes is clear skies as we ross the balds, of course winds less than 30knotts would be nice too.

Yellow Mountain Gap looks like a nice cliff from the profile. Does one hike or rappel the first bit?

After speaking with my XC skiing friend today, I was told that most of the area up top was in the 6 inch range and she didn't encounter anything approaching a foot in depth.
With postholing not being likely, I'll stick with hiking with a pack. That first year with the pulks soured me on off-camber pulking. I spent more time pulling my sled back to the trail than pulling it along the trail.

    me too on pulking

with me thinking they are for the flats mostly but I know some hill climb with them.
BUT it sounds like Overmountain is a go! and that is terrific news. One of the top 5 sections of the entire AT!

Looks like rain Friday and Sunday. Hopefully the Sunday rain won't hit until afternoon. I looked at Minneapolis, NC and Roan Mountain, TN on weather.gov. The lows at elevation look to be in the high teens for RHK and high 20's for Over Mountain the following night. Hopefully Friday's rain will be snow at elevation.

Unless the forecast shifts cooler, I'll be leaving my overboots behind. I'll probably be donning my trail runners with some gaiters for the hike. I may get crazy and bring my Wiggy's packboot liners for camp shoes.

With the temps in question, I'm leaning toward a hammock sock, Peapod and a thin pad with a possible summer TQ.
