Got bored and did some number crunching.

I know I'm kind of preaching to the choir here... but listen to me anyway :P

I was looking at my pack weight template and went ahead and put in my desired hammock setup and figured out I'll be saving 5 pounds by converting over. How did I ever convince myself that carrying that tent was what I needed to do?

I ran some other suspension and tarp setups and found I can almost clear 6 pounds of difference.

My wife said "go for it" when I told her how much weight I'd be saving. Guess I need to start making some decisions...

Can you throw in a little comparison data, like to see where you are getting the 5 pound improvement. Not deterring you in any way, only time I sleep on the ground anymore is when I confuse my sleeping aids with M&Ms!

    Current tent/sleep system
    • tent (fly/ground cloth included) - 5.9lb
    • thermarest pad - 2.4 lb
    • sleeping bag 1.5 lb

    total = 9.8 lbs

    playing with stuff I'd like
    • wbbb - 29.6oz (1.85 lb) [includes adj.webbing and clips]
    • sf - 19oz (1.19 lb)
    • 3 season yeti - 12.5oz (0.78 lb)
    • 3 season mamba (reg) - 19oz (1.19 lb)

    total 80.1oz (5.01 lb)

*all weights taken from manufacturer websites except for tent that I have actually weighed.

admittedly, I have the basecamp thermarest which is far heavier than I need 90% of the time. my total pack weight (pre food/water/clothes) is a little over 17 pounds. I'm not sure I ever realized that half of it was my shelter/sleep system

Most of my gear was pieced together over my college years so it was what I could afford at the time. I never claimed to be an ultralighter...

pretty nice. even if you just switched to the hammock and tarp instead of your tent setup you'll still be saving ~3lbs which would be a pretty good starting point

True, but I somehow got permission from the wife... seems that I should jump before she changes her mind

You were packing a heavy tent and pad. Yes you will get lighter with a hammock system and by all means I say go for it. But you could have also got to your targeted weight with newer, lighter tent and pad....if that was your only objective.
