I see no reason for D rings unless you want to quickly clip a Dutch Stinger or a Carabinier. If the rings fail you will have to fix it like you did. Subjecting the tarp to the damage anyway. It may prolong the damage to the tarp, but not with out the cost of being a weight penalty and having to re rig your tarp twice.

On a related side note: I'm debating cutting all the D rings off of my Incubator, only thing hold ding me back is resale value, when the next greatest thing comes out...

If you think there is a chance that they may break, why not add a "saftey". A short piece of cord between the ridge guy and tarp would serve the purpose. If you used a loop if zing-it, or even a piece of shock cord, if the D ring were to break, at least the tarp wouldn't fall on you, and you would must have to tighten the ridge, and your back in action. Sorry to hear about the D-rings snapping. More than likely it was due to the colder temperatures affecting the plastic while under load. While we have tested them in most conditions, including single digits, and had good results, I can see that there could be conditions where they might fail (obviously). They are, after all, 1/2 inch plastic d-rings.

We decided to use those particular rings for a couple of reasons. One, they go a long way to keep the weight down. I would put Dutchware titanium d-rings on every tarp if I could afford it. They are strong and who does not like titanium? Also, we build the tarp in such a way that if there is a failure to one of the d-rings, the remaining webbing attachment can still be used for the pullout. This allows the user to finish the trip and send it back to us for repair if deemed necessary.

We have a good number of our cuben tarps out in the market now and we have had only heard of a very few instances of failure. Few enough that manufacture defects of the d-rings themselves could be a factor.

It goes without say, but I will say it, that we will fix your tarp if you send it back to us. I apologize for any hardship you might have experienced out on the trail.

I have a new HG Cuben Fiber tarp. If I clip Dutchware Stingerz directly to the tie-out loop, rather than the D-ring, with Zing-it/Lash-it ridgeline, am I putting my tarp at risk of damage? I am not equipped for extreme cold, thinking more of wind.

    Thanks

Absolutely, and just to be clear StormCrow did reach out to me both in the forum and privately within an hour of the original post offering to do whatever was needed to repair the tarp to my satisfaction at no cost. You have to love a vendor who stands behind his gear 100%. Thanks Adam!
    see you on the trail,

That's a wonderful idea. I love having a "firebreak" in my tarps; I'd much rather eat the cost of a $0.25 piece of plastic than a $100+ tarp (let alone what Cuben offerings cost). Your idea lets me have my cake and eat it too (isn't that what cake is for?), Roadrunnr72. Not only will the "firebreak" give first, the backup'll allow me to avoid the possible complications of being wet and cold (which might just be even worse than losing some cash; cash is replaceable, life isn't).

    Thanks!
