I see no reason for D rings unless you want to quickly clip a Dutch Stinger or a Carabinier. If the rings fail you will have to fix it like you did. Subjecting the tarp to the damage anyway. It may prolong the damage to the tarp, but not with out the cost of being a weight penalty and having to re rig your tarp twice.
On a related side note: I'm debating cutting all the D rings off of my Incubator, only thing hold ding me back is resale value, when the next greatest thing comes out...

If you think there is a chance that they may break, why not add a "saftey". A short piece of cord between the ridge guy and tarp would serve the purpose. If you used a loop if zing-it, or even a piece of shock cord, if the D ring were to break, at least the tarp wouldn't fall on you, and you would must have to tighten the ridge, and your back in action.
