Last week I decided to build my own under quilt. I could not and still can not afford to purchase one. I have had a M-1949 military mummy bag in my closet for years. I have thought it would make a nice under quilt but did not want to deal with the feather loss and sewing issues. I also had seen where the value of this bag was only about $50-$70, so I was not risking too much loss if things went horribly wrong... Well I decided it was time.
I started by removing the zipper from top to bottom and found that the seams were sown under the zipper. I reenforced the seams and then tackled the foot end of the bag. I decided to cut the foot end open completely so the whole bag laid out flat. Before I did this I pinned the edges that I was going to sew, to prevent feather loss. This actually worked quite well and there was NOT an indoor "snow storm." I then salvaged part of the backing from the zipper that had grommet holes in it and attached that to the bottom of the quilt as well. This makes it so that the end can be laced up with para-chord for heat retention. Next I attached loops to the edge of the quilt to run chord through for hanging it from my hammock. This turned out even better than I thought and works great. (well...hanging in my front room anyway) I have not been able to get out and use this in the trees, but plan a trip soon. I will try to post pictures but had trouble doing so last time I attempted it. Okay, I was able to get pics on the post so here it is. BTW this is my first post and I am new to this forum and to "hanging" so any and all, good or bad responses are welcome. Just be gentle please...
