Confused by all these options?

If it makes you feel any better, I lost interest about two years ago, and don't even try to keep up with all of this. I hang my hammock and go to sleep. The end.

On the other hand, I recently got re-energized and have built at least one of nearly everything. I find it fun to try new things and find new ways to lighten my load. Lots of new ideas have been developed in the last few years. They are loads of fun to try out.

Dave Youngblood used to use yellow polypropylene rope (It squished into a wide band to protect the tree) as a suspension. IIRC, it was rated at 300 pounds. He also wrote up the formulas showing how much weight the line has to take for different angles of hang. But it seemingly worked anyway. I also like Sarge's take on it... if you try this, you might die.

According to that chart, if you hang at a 30 degree angle then you are putting almost exactly your weight on the suspension... So assuming that is correct, 300 lbs is sufficient for me.

That said, I've heard it said and definitely agree; I'd rather carry a few extra ounces so that I can climb in and fall asleep soundly knowing my suspension won't fail than shave a few ounces and have trouble sleeping because I'm worried about it failing. If I was an engineer and could properly convince myself that a lesser suspension was OK then I probably would, but I'm not so I won't.

I think the "Single Line Suspension (SLS)" in the sticky is still the best option for me that I have seen as it allows you spare rope were ever you need it. I always carry about 15 metres of paracord anyway and rope is always useful in the bush has a billion uses. This is just another means to carry something similar but slightly more heavy duty that keeps pack weight down as it serving multiple purposes. i'm leaning towards the 1.8mm dynaglide rated to 475kgs which is more than ample for my weight besides I wont be shock loading.

It will all become clear if you watch some of the YouTube videos posted by site members like Shug and others. In the end anything that holds 3 or 4 times your weight and does no harm will work fine.
