Soon I'll lose these rags and run, Returning to the wild where I'm from. -Chris Whitley
You are right, and I have done it because I like like the smaller cord attached directly to the tree straps. I can get by with shorter straps, less cord, but I like the fact that the sliding toggle is already there and dependable. Also it acts similar to a pulley when you undo the half hitch, leaving the hammock in place and pulling on the free end. Though I dont think you would want to pull it too tight, its just a wood toggle.
Excellent sketch! OK, we'll let you off the hook on the the video if you agree to live demonstrations at all the group hangs!
Just when I told myself I was done with alternate suspensions!!

I love it. Every time, I get my setup to what I want, one of you smart fellows comes along with a great idea and everything before it sounds stupid.
I'm going to have to give this a go.
Great pic! That explains what I was missing.
Kinda having a funny feeling here . . . Almost like I feel dirty cause I'm thinking of cheating on my whoopies! This sliding toggle makes enough sense that my love affair with my whoopies could be over -- or maybe they'd get along with the sliding toggles and I could keep em both, kinda like "sister wives!"

"But hey, 2 trees anywhere is a bedroom waiting to happen, right?"
Not a bad idea. With the toggle being the adjustment you can eliminate the whoopie all together. Makes for a lighter setup all around.
Yosemite Sam: Are you trying to make me look a fool?
Bugs: You don't need me to make you look like a fool.
Yosemite Sam: Yer deerrrnnn right I don't!
Hmm... I like it. I might try it on one of my hammocks. The diagram definitely clears it up. Thanks.
Like the others the sketch makes all the difference. Are you finding that you get additional strech at the larkshead where you attach to your straps? Adjustments are always necassary regardless, but are you finding an increase in your fiddle factor?
Sure! Ill demonstrate...just not sure I can make ALL the group hangs.
Kinda funny though, I missed out on one up near Joyce Kilmer Memorial forest last year up in Nantahala. I think it was one of the sub 5lb hangs. I was right next door with a group hiking in the forest right around the corner, but didnt know about it till too late.
And the alternate suspension stuff is definitely one of the things that keeps me coming back here. (ASA: Alternate Suspension Addict)
thanks for the props on the illustration, all. Finally found a use for that art schoolin'.
