Question Hammock fabric extension help question

I need some advice. I have made several SL and DL crinkle taffeta tablecloth hammocks and they have turned out well. I want to make a new DL one for a friend with a color that only comes in square tableclothes. My idea is to get three 90" square ones, cut one in half and sew those onto the other two pieces. That would give me two pieces 90"x135" minus the seam allowance. I need the hammock to be very strong since it is for a big guy.

    These are my questions.
Is attaching the two pieces together, with a seam, weight bearing safe??
How many rows of stitches should I do at that connection seam?
Should I do a traditional seam or overlap the pieces and sew through them from the top? Would that make it stronger? I would rather not do this if unnecessary as the color will be hard to match with a strong thread.
Should I put the two seams at opposite ends of the hammock for strength?

The two complete layers will be sewn together for about 70" on each side. I would think this will also contribute to the strength of the hammock as some of the weight would be distributed to these seams.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

JB: I guess no one wants to go out on a limb here. No one's done it that I recall. Side-to-side seams are inherently weak (they perforate the cloth like a postage stamp). Side-to-side seams in the end for channels get the added strength of being in the gather. Also, they are not subject to concentrated pressure of an elbow, knee or heel. It may very well be strong enough, but I'd be afraid to give it the green light. Doubling up the layers would help for sure but I just don't know how much.

All I can add is that Tableclothfactory has sales every week--alternating free shipping and 20% off so don't feel like you have to make a decision today.

They do have 90" x 156" tablecloths in both crinkle taffeta and polyester (which is a heavy-duty broadcloth-like fabric) Two layers of that would hold anything. I believe a single layer of taffeta is rated 400 pounds, so two layers would hold anybody. You could do one layer of each with the crinkle taffeta on the inside for comfort (less scratchy).

That's all I can offer. Sorry, I don't have more info to give you. Someone will chime in, I'm sure. Best of luck to you!!!

I would avoid this if possible... the strength in the fabric is the sheer volume of threads running end to end...

If you want to make a doudle layer, and be able to give the color that they want, I would suggest making the one side out of a regular table cloth, and then the other (preference) color from the squares. You would then have the strength of not having a seam to hold pressure, and have the color choice. You or they would have to decide whether the favorite color goes to the outside, or inside. As the others have said, I wouldn't chance a cross seam......RR

Thanks, guys. I was just mulling this over with another hanger and we had come up with the same idea as RR. I think I will use a full size piece on the inner and the preference color on the outer layer. That should be plenty strong enough. I always appreciate input from everyone. More minds together come up with great ideas!

I would think it is best to buy some Ritt dye and a white tablecloth.

That didn't even cross my mind!! That's a really good idea. Hmmm. Well, I decided to put off buying the material for this for now. I'll be buying it the next sale though. That will give me a little time to think these ideas through.
