What is the purpose of the ridgeline? From differant pics I see it just looks like just a line from one end of the hammok to the other. Please explain. Thanks

From my understanding it controls the sag of the actual hammock, which determines how you lay. Also it's a great place to hang things. ;D
What he said. The ridgeline does maintain a consistant ammount of sag in your hammock, without one every hang will be slightly different causing the feeling and lay of your hammock to be different. This is what is known as a "Structrual ridgeline". Some people only use a thin piece of cord for a ridgeline simply to have a place to hang stuff and sometimes with the use of an additional bug net or sock the ridgeline helps to keep those things off of you while you sleep.

The sag of the hammock is a comsequence of the angle of suspension. The longer the suspension (and greater suspension angle) the more sag you get and the shorter the suspension (and smaller suspension angle) the less sag. For consistency a SRL can make up for shorter suspension.

Don't let life get in the way of living.
If you have the perfect hang, with the tree straps at the right height, suspension at the correct angle, the ridgeline should have little to no tension on it. But if you don't have everything set perfect, the ridgeline keeps the sag just right. A good starting point is 83% of the hammock length. Then adjust to a little shorter or longer until you find what works for you. Some like a little more sag, some a little less. I use a whoopie for the ridge, so I can make these adjustments and find the perfect hang......RR

Thank you for the education. So if I am reading you right the SRL purpose is a measuring devise for a consistant lay.
Here is a bit more........Ridgeline

Thanks Shug. I appreciate all help. That site is good info
It also holds the invaluable Ridge Line Organizer (or two) for those of us without a shelf in the hammock, wherein we can store all our little necessities.

If you have a belly like mine it also comes in handy pulling yourself up out of the hammock LOL!! I tie a piece of line through the mini d ring on the left foot end of my incubator and throw it over my STR and tie it to the mini d ring on the right shoulder of the UQ and pull it until it is just right and this holds it in perfect position as I am laying on a diagonal
