Is a snakeskin bulkier than folded or stuffed?

I've just tried hair ties, and I haven't tried too hard, but much initial impression is that the snake is tough to wrestle.

I don't think its bulkier per say although it may not conform as well inside the pack. It really depends on how you pack it I think. I found strapping them to the outside of my pack worked well. Made everything really easy. I also found it worked well when I stuck it on the very top of my pack. It didnt work as well for me stuff near the bottom. But the main reason for snake skins is the simplicity of setup...

I have a Tadpole and Superfly, both with skins, (no-seeum) and both stuffed into there original stuff sacks. A little tighter going in, but still fit......RR

I find the same thing. I don't find the difference that noticeable. Any perceived increase in difficulty is offset by ease of deployment IMO.

I was using hair ties with my old tarp, the one in my avatar, but for a number of reason I've found they aren't going to work with my Superfly.

Can't say if they are bulkier than stuff sacks/bishop bags. Did away with stuff sacks 3 years ago. All 3 hammocks and their accompanying tarps are skinned. They fit well in the large pocket on the ULA Catalyst. No digging around in the pack and the tarps get out to the trees a lot quicker. Folded over like link sausage and wrapped with my guylines to keep them squeezed together

That pretty much describes it for me .
The snakeskin empty almost disappears - but with a tarp inside it just doesn't want to conform. But, as others have said, I use them because they make tarp handling so much easier it is worth the extra effort packing them.

+1 for putting them in the back pocket. If you have set up in rain or snow, that's the moment you'll really appreciate it.
.....like link sausage.....Rockdawg, you're making me hungry for some of your venison sausage! Best darn grub a fella can eat!

My tarp without snakeskins fit loosely i to its original stuff sack. With the snakeskins, I can still get it into the stuff sack, but it's a very tight fit.

I don't use a stuff sack though; I simply coil the skinned tarp into the front pocket on my pack. Then it's ready to deploy in the rain, without opening the pack and exposing the contents to the rain.
