What type of thread to use for DIY tarp.

As of today I have ordered some 70d coated ripstop fabric from DIY gear Supply to tackle my first tarp. I have done my homework and figured out what size and stitches etc. i'll be using, however, I haven't come across anything in particular regarding what type of thread to use? Does it matter? I always use Guttermanns 100% polyester ( the heavy coat stuff), but I want to be sure I have all my ducks in a row. So if anyone has any suggestions please share. Thanks in advance!

i used regular sewing thread (cotton with a polyester covering) and it worked badly... i still managed to make a set of snakeskins, and they're still in use 5-6 years later, but i'd use pure poly thread next time. stronger and won't rot or weaken like cotton. i keep waiting for mine to blow out a seam...

What you are currently using is fine and dandy.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

DIY Gear Supply also carries Gutermann threads.

I like the Mara 70 for ripstop and webbing. I sometimes use the Tera 40 for webbing.

I have also been known to use Gutermann's Sew All available locally.

Mara 70 or Mara 100 are both suitable for tarps, Mara 70 is a pretty heavy thread, #14 needle require, at least on our machines, Mara 100 we used #12 needles.

Both are super strong braided threads from Gutermann...

I feel like people have a tendency to go overkill on thread some times. Mara 70 is fine, and may even be overkill for this application. Just make sure you use the proper size needle and make sure that whatever you use is 100% polyester.

That all depends on whether you would like to have the stitching or the fabric rip first.

My preference is to have the stitching fail first. But that's a personal issue. Easier to restitch a line of stitching in the field than to try to repair a tear in a tarp. YMMV
