    Sewing needle question?

Can anyone recomend a sewing machine needle size for sewing 1.1 oz silnylon. I have been playing around a bit with diffreent needles and am not sure what works best. It seems I can sew better with the larger needles but I think its the needle eyelet being bigger that helps. I`m using 100% polyester thread ( I`m not sure of the thickness but Its seems pretty thick because it gets bunched up at the eye often on the smaller needles.)

Any thoughts or sugestions? I am very new to sewing and could use any insight.
    Thanks for looking

Guess it depends on if you are concerned with the size of the hole the needle makes. With items that need to be sealed or with down I would go with a size 9 or 10 needle to keep the hole size small. Otherwise I tend to use an 11 or 12 needle.

Thanks for the input. i`m not that concerned with the size of the hole it makes in the fabric say, because I am planning on using a seam sealer anyway.
I have an older singer so I bought a variety package of singer needles and the sizes were like, a couple 80`s, a couple 90`s, and I think 100`s. Do you or anybody know if an 80=size 8 and so on?. does that make sense?

One thing that _must not_ happen is for the thread to bunch going through the eye of the needle. Bigger needles have bigger eyes. I personally use a larger needle all the time as my eyes won't let me thread a smaller needle. I just can't see like I used to.

IMO if the setup you have does what you want it to, then there is no real reason to change it. If it ain't broke... etc.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

"Bless you child, when you set out to thread a needle don't hold the thread still and fetch the needle up to it; hold the needle still and poke the thread at it; that's the way a woman most always does, but a man always does t'other way."

A size 11 or 12 "Sharp" needle works well with 1.1 ripstop. However, the thread size must match as well. It you want to use a thread that is too thick for an 11 to 12 needle, you will need to go up in size.

The size thread that will pull smoothly through the eye is only one aspect of matching needle to thread. The thread also must fit well in the groove that runs the length of the needle.

When all else fails...go to the thread manufacturers website and look up the recommended needle sizes for your particular thread.
