    First Winter Trip

My overnight trip to the local mountains on 1/26-27 would have been excellent, were it not for unforeseen trail conditions (VERY deep snow). A 2- mile hike in turned into a 4 hour ordeal for me, post-holing almost all the way. I was really glad I had crampons, but snowshoes would have helped even more.

I was the only hanger; the others had tents. I was pretty beat when I got to camp.

I used the WBBB 1.1 double, a 20-degree Zeppelin from UG, and a Siltarp2. And I still swear by the adjustable webbing straps that came on the BB--they work excellent. I also put together a piece of Zing-it line for the trap ridgeline: I tied a loop on one end so it could be wrapped around the tree like the webbing straps, and held in place by a micro carabiner. The Zing it stays taut.

Temps got down to the low 30s overnight; I checked the temp under my tarp during the night and it was 39. Wind blowing some, and a few snow showers. Other than my toes being cold all night, I was pretty warm. And the hammock is always pleasant to climb into!

Would I do it again? Hmmmmm...still thinking about it.

Yeah those toes are tricky to keep warm sometimes. Last trip I was on my toes were great, but my heels got a bit chilly - so I'm adding a little ccf pad into my sleep system to go in my footbox on cold nights (I think shug does the same with a blow up sit pad)

Anyways keep at it man! Its cool honing in your sleep system. And the guys here will offer plenty of good advice learned the hard way I'm sure.

By the way, it may just be me, but I think your picture links may be broken.

Glad your enjoying your setup so much. I could feel your tiredness. It can be exhausting. Definitely pick up some snowshoes,,makes things much easier altho going uphill in winter is just plain hard work. Have fun

Thanks--yes, unfortunately I was so exhausted I could not fully enjoy the experience. Next time (if there is one--snow trip that is) I will not leave behind the fleece tights and down booties--with those I would have been like toast all night!

Try camping someplace thats easier to get to so you can spend more time with your camp setup. Once your setup and happy you can go for a snowshoe at your leisure. Down is light to carry and you can't have too much.

    Hi UW,
Nice trip report and picts. Congrats on your successful winter hang.
Snowshoeing and winter hanging does require a lot more effort and
energy and I think you did great.

I really like having a few chemical warmers to put between two pairs of
socks for those times when my feet just won't warm up.
Also look into the hot water bottle trick.

    cold feet

Applying talc or baby powder to feet, and putting on DRY socks help feet to be warmer,....... just a thought.
Since I retired, some times I stay awake all day, some times all night.
