it also makes the hammock stronger. load is split between both pieces, so a double 1.1 will be able to handle much more weight than a single 1.1.
How much the load is split can change with thick pads. I used a two layer hammock with 1.1 RSN for a year or so when I was doing a lot of backpacking. During winter camping when I would have a thick stack of ccf pads between the layers, the top layer wasn't handling its share of the load like it did when there were no pads or a thinner padding between the layers. I never had a problem with it and I don't think I was using more than about an inch of pad thickness but it was something I was aware of. When you put thicker padding between the layers of a hammock, you are creating a differential shape between the two layers. Thicker air pads might create enough differential to put most all of the load on the bottom layer.

you're right it does, a thick air pad would do it the most. for me a ba air pad in a 1.1 double is still loading the part of the inner layer that's holding my weight (middle section). not as much as the outer layer though. with more weight the more the outer layer will stretch and the more weight will be transfered to the inner layer. it may never split it evenly with a pad in the sleeve though.
