    Good for them!

The REI I went to recently sold mostly ENO stuff and no polyester webbing. The only webbing they had was nylon (a few different types), even when the guy checked the computer. He even went so far as to tell me that "Nylon is the industry standard, and it may be hard to find polyester webbing..."

I guess nylon works (even if a little stretchy)... but instead I ordered my webbing from one of our cottage dealers here. Readily available and really good stuff!

If anyone is interested, they can check out Arrowhead-equipment, dutchware, whoopieslings, and many many more that have some great supplies to get started down the addictive path of hammock "pimping."

That's very cool! I bought several descender rings at REI recently for a single ring suspension and the guy asked what it was for. I mentioned it was for hanging a hammock and he looked at me like I was speaking a whole other language.

Off hand I think he has it backwards. In the climbing world tubular nylon is standard partly because it stretches. In the webbing world I would bet it is last place. Look at all the slings, seat belts, and tie down straps made from polyester and polypropylene. I could run on but I think you get the picture. ;-)

The new REI here in Cincinnati has a few ENO items and the staff has no clue about hammocks. Every time I stop in I start asking questions about hammocks hoping they will get the hint to be honest I would rather buy all my hammock gear from cottage vendors anyway.

Me too...that would be very interesting.

I was in Rei this week and met a young kid who had said he was thru hiking April 1st and was asking the clerk for some tips. I jumped in and mentioned hammocks. He said he already has a Hennessy hyperlight! I was like yeaaaaa! He was asking about using pads with a hammock. After a little discussion on pad extenders and underquilts I then mentioned this site for more information...he has already been here!

I then told him to check out shugs hammock how to videos...he hadn't seen them and I really hope he does.

    hammocking is absolutely catching on.

I long for the day when I can shop for an underquilt at rei

Not me. If the underquilt gets to that point it'll be made with low quality materials in a sweatshop, by an under paid over worked employee. Unlike the quilts made with high quality materials by our over worked, under paid cottage vendors.
