    Talking Hammock Newbie

Hello everyone. I just joined the forum and am excited to meet other hammockers and to learn more about the hammock camping craft. I have been backpacking and paddle touring for a decade. I started using hammocks to some extent a couple of years ago because I have never slept well on the ground.

I'll never forget my first night out with a hammock. Two years ago in July, I paddled to Little St. George Island and set up the hammock between a pair of palm trees. I enjoyed a light breeze coming off the ocean and relaxed in supreme comfort for an hour.

I then decided to set up the tarp. The tarp kept the breeze out and transformed the climate around my hammock into a hot, humid, jungle- like sauna. The tarp came down and I slept under the stars.

About 2:00 am I felt the first few raindrops on my nose. By 2:20, my hammock was swinging wildly in the wind and I was soaking wet. I spent the rest of the night with my now shivering body wrapped in my tarp and hammock, sitting under the palm tree. To top off my bad trip, I flipped my kayak as I left the island the next morning, losing my keys.

Since my baptism by fire (or water as the case may be) I have decided to try to perfect the art of hammock camping. I look forward to soliciting your help along the way.

I would love to meet some hammock campers in the Tallahassee, FL area. My opportunities for camping are mostly restricted to Monday through Thursday as I work the weekend night shift at the hospital. Happy hammocking!

Florida seems to have a pretty healthy population of hangers so I'm sure you will have no trouble meeting a few crazies... Welcome to the insanity from south Texas...
