WP/B hammock sock, the budget way?

Goals:
- I want to make a hammock sock that I can use "year round."
- I want the sock to replace my tarp. I don't wanna have to stake it out.
- I want the sock to breath well enough to not rain on the inside in say 40-50* weather.
- Don't break the bank!
- Make it affordable
- Did I say make it to cheap

Idea:
- Sew 2 driducks ponchos together to make a large rectangle.
- Sew mesh under hoods (bug free vents)
- Follow Fronkey's bug net plans
- Use excess material to add a few more vents as needed
- Seam tape
- Add small splash flap over big opening at the bottom. (dri duck emergency poncho fabric

Total weight: ~17.5-20oz
Total out of pocket cost: ~$30 (using scraps from other projects)

There are certainly lighter ways to go but you seem to have a great idea of testing this out to understand the viability of it. Personally, I am not quite sure how you would be able to fully protect yourself from the different angles of rain and still retain the breathability of the sock. For myself, I plan on a light sock and a light tarp paired together to give me the best of both worlds and more modular abilites and still around your decided total weight.

If I use the emergency poncho for the whole thing I can get the weight down.

Hangnout has a design based on a DriDucks poncho. I found it on YouTube this past weekend. Maybe this will give you some ideas.



I'm interested to understand how he seals the poncho to the silnylon.

That is what got the ball rolling. The more I think about it though the more I think he needs the half tarp design for venting.

Dri-ducks is certainly the right choice if you want to use it all year round, because it's the most breathable waterproof fabric out there. And it's cheap, although not very durable (keep some McNet Tenacious Tape handy).

I would think that you would want one stake per side to make an overhang for your net vents. You could pull the overhangs out hight to allow more breeze in summer or stake them out low to block the breeze in winter. Plus, that would keep the sock from blowing up against you on a blustery night.

The one in the above video can be tarped out also. It does not have a SEEP so when it is tarped out it is more for weather/wind protection.

The latest models have the sock main body with lots of breathable material and a true half tarp not intended to lay against hammock. MM has the cuben version and I tested the Sil/DriDucks/1.1 ripstop on Roan High Knob in single digits and 40mph gusts and never had a problem. I will try to get some video up soon.

I really want to see the updated version. My thought was to add more WP/B fabric to possibly increase breathability. Remove the tarp for ease of setup.
