    Points to ponder...

    After spending another winter night out in the bush I have assembled the following points to ponder;
    - I still can't get methyl hydrate to burn with any consistency (in a bios type stove), even when kept warm (is HEET the answer?)
    - Even my Soto micro stove failed miserably at -16c with a jetboil canister, well not really the stove, it was the gas, and being 4 season gas, I never went out of my way to keep it warm
    - Pulks are pretty cool and very useful
    - I missed the sound of coyotes through the night, this trip was eerily quiet
    - I find my BB is slightly less comfortable when I don't have it tied out
    - Freezer bag cooking is cool, there are some great recipes but I think I can do better meal wise (real food!), but it's hard to clean dishes at -16c if cooking in a pot or pan
    - My cook kit (currently a GSI minimalist and soloist) may not be the wisest choices

The fun thing about all of this is going through the process of trying resolve all of these points.
Just wanted to pass on my thoughts.

I know what you mean. My last time out, all I heard was a large rock roll down the hill below me. For a minute or so, my mind was scrolling through the list of large beast that could've made that rock roll.

That's one of the great things about the outdoors. Unlimited opportunities for skill grow, gear testing and just plain enjoying the wonderful things that surround us!

Nice list - I also especially enjoy FBC.

In cold weather a multifuel type stove burning gasoline or kerosene is the way to go. Those butane canister type things tend to pack in when the butane gets cold. And I have trouble enough keeping batteries for the camera warm...altrnativley get an Optimus or something burning wood.

And if you get a decent liquid fuel stove that simmers you can cook real food. I'd look for a Peak One. YMMV.

I tend to regard a Pulk about the way I do a canoe. Fewer long distance carries so one might as well add a couple of pounds of good stuff. That can include real food and a decent cooking setup. That is a couple of pounds that make a big difference in comfort as well as a better diet from a health stand point.

    .

Why's that? I get that actual cooking food might be an issue since it's small and really designed for just boiling water.

I like my Kelly Kettle. I have yet to hit a temp that sticks don't burn at.

I use a little Trangia alcohol stove. You can put it inside your jacket for a while to warm it up if you like. Been using denatured alcohol you get from the hardware store for several years now. Works for me.

-16c is crazy cold. I don't think I would work at that temp.

Us Canadians are hearty souls!! We've had snow here since October and it will probably be here until mid May.
