Well that kind of stinks! I was hoping to be able to use the stock tarp with it that way I wouldn't have to buy another one. I would try some DIY stuff, but I honestly don't trust myself with a DIY tarp that I'll be using almost daily for 6 months on my thru. haha

Also this tarp looks like something relatively small, but pretty protective. What do you guys think about it?

I used a Mac Cat Deluxe with my HH on my thru last year.
I never staked out the hammock.
I did bring an extra stake for wind.

My MacCat did AWESEOME! - not wet once the whole time.

the standard tarp that comes with it seemed rather small.
I went with the recommendation of another thru hiker the previous year.

I brought a little pillow. Clothes stuffing did not work quite the same. But do what suits you

I've never carried a pillow camping (tenting even). I try to double purpose all my year, so for a pillow, a light weight dry sack is used, filled with clothing and or some air.
I'll either tuck it in the head of my mommy bag or into a shirt in order to keep from sticking to the outside of the bag.

Not sure about others, but I try to pack everything so that if I end up swimming with my gear, the important stuff stays dry.
I've only tested this type of packing twice, once I slipped while rock hopping and the other time the river forging ended up river swimming.

Yea, the tadpole looks small, but reasonable. Especially on price per size as well. I think that one may be the one!

1.) I'm considering not even getting a pillow, is this wise?

I had just woken up to the mailman delivering my package of biners/rings and went outside immediately to set it up. Once inside I was sleeping in about 5 minutes. With the elevation towards my head end, I just don't think I'd need a pillow, I was more than comfortable.

Hi Wesley and boy I bet you're excited! Just some thoughts to consider but just go with what you're comfortable with as you'll have plenty of time to make adjustments. You can ditch the pillow and use a piece of clothing that you're not wearing or even empty stuff sacks. Cuts down on weight a bit.

2.) When going on my thru, I'm debating on carrying only 2 stakes, just for the tarp. What do you think?

I would actually consider myself to be the complete opposite of claustrophobic, I really enjoy being in small spaces. This being said, I don't know if I'll even want to stake out my hammock like that again. It also seems like if I don't stake out the hammock that the CCF pad will wrap around me even more, which I like.

If you're saying you'd carry stakes for the tarp and for the side tie outs for the hammock, you can actually tie the side tieouts to one of the corners of your tarp (where you stake the tarp down) if you want to pull the hammock apart. Not sure which tarp you have, but most of them have some sort of ring where you stake the tarp down. Unless Tom has changed it, those hammock side tie outs are really stretchy and long, so you really only need enough stakes for just your tarp.

I really believe you'll stay warmer without tying those hammock side strings out though and I also think you're right that the CCF pad will tend to wrap around you a bit more if you don't tie them out.
    This is my signature.
