JCP Puffer Top Quilt Help!

So I went out and grabbed all the puffer jackets my local JCP had in stock for larger sizes. It's an incredible deal, way cheaper than just buying materials so thanks to everyone for posting this on the forum. I made a basic top quilt using bowl-maker's method (thanks for that!). It will be great for my wife, but the footbox is a little snug for me. I like moving my legs around to get comfy in the hammock, and I tend to sleep hot. So I've thought about doing a plain quilt without a footbox for me. ::OK, maybe just a little omni tape and a shockcord in case it really gets cold:: I have lots of panels from disassembled jackets but I have no idea the best way to assemble them. I'm a sewing newbie so I was hoping for some advice. The arm holes leave round spots, so that seems tricky for me. I've thought about leaving a fairly unmodified jacket for the top, just like in the bowl-maker tutorial, but then attaching panels to the bottom of it to make a relatively flat and open quilt. I know we have some real gear whizzes here, so I trust you guys will have great ideas! Thanks in advance!!!

what I did is sewed the edges of the panels together
on the inside of the quilt I just placed the edges together pinned them and sewed about 1/4 of an inch from the ends

And I am No Seamstress HA HA

Thanks for the heads up! Yeah, I'm definitely inexperienced in sewing anything, but trying to fit the different shapes together is getting me! I'm not sure the best way to make a roughly rectangular quilt using the weird shaped panels. Some are pretty straight along the edges, but most have at least one curved side.
