    Question for all DIYers!

Is it safe to put pins in the edge of a ripstop nylon hammock to hold the hems in place while I sew? I wasn't sure if it would hurt the material. Sorry if this is a stupid question but I am going to try my first DIY hammock today and I have never sewn anything in my life. Thanks in advance!

If you using basic 1.1 ripstop it will be ok. Cuben fiber and M50 dont heal so well.

Two things to be concerned about... 1)Get all the pins out of the hammock before you get into it. 2) Do not sew over the pins. Remove them from the fabric as the get close to the presser foot. Hitting a pin with the needle can have undesirable results. Every thing from dulling the needle to breaking the needle and having shards fly all over the place. OSHA requires sewing machine operaters to wear safety goggles in the event of such a mishap.

Of course rigorously following #2 helps in following #1.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

You can always just error on the side of caution and use the lil office binder clips. That's what I use, way better and safer than pins.

Am I the only one concerned with the term rigorous being used in the same sentence as #2?

    Re: Question for all DIYers!

What I used on my hammock was my wife's millions of Bobbi pens. They work very well and if you don't mind spending two bucks and some change, you can buy two packages at Walmart and you get about 90 or so. Also the small office clips work very well too. I use them both. Hope this helps

You can most definitely use pins. Put them in perpendicular to the sew line and go right over the top of them. When you are done, just pull them all out.

Just a question about 1.1 oz nylon. I found some here: http://www.backwoodsdaydreamer.com/p...hable-fabrics/Would the 1.1 oz ripstop 2nds work for a hammock? I am 6' and 185 pounds (not sure if the height matters).

Yeah, it'll work. I weigh 370 and I've spent several nights in a hammock made from 1.1 oz. 2nds at Backwoods Daydreamer. Then, while I was climbing out after relaxing in it for a couple of hours one evening, it slowly started to rip from one side, right at the whipping on the gathered end. I decided that the mason's line I used to whip it was probably too small and basicall cut it at the edge. I've since sewed an end channel into both ends and haven't had any trouble. I think I would have been fine if I'd whipped it with Amsteel or paracord.
